1949 Duck - Free Vintage Crochet Pattern

MATERIALS: 1 (1 oz) ball each: yellow, red and white (book calls for American Thread Company Dawn Worsted Floss) It looks more like a heavier cotton crochet thread.

Bone Crochet Hook No. 2

Cotton, old nylon stocking or other filling material.

BACK AND SIDE SECTION:
With color yellow, ch 26

1st Row: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in next 22 ch, ch 5 hdc in next ch, working on other side of starting ch, hdc in each ch across row. Ch 2, turn. Remainder of duck is worked in pattern.

2nd Row: Hdc in front loop of next hdc, hdc in back loop of next hdc (pattern). Repeat from * across. Ch 2, turn.

3rd Row: Hdc in next 23 hdc, keeping pattern straight work 2 hdc in next 5 hds, hdc in each remaining st across. Ch 2 turn.

4th Row: Inc 2 hdc at beg of row (To make inc: work 1 st in front loop and 1 st in back loop of same st), work even in pattern, skip 1 st at end of row (dec made). Ch 1, turn.

5th Row: Sl st in next 2 sts (1 st dec), ch 2, hdc in next 23 hdc, 2 hdc in next 5 hdc, hdc in each remaining hdc, increasing 1 hdc at end of row. Ch 2, turn.

6th Row: Inc 1 hdc in next st, hdc in next 26 hdc, 2 hdc in next 14 sts, hdc in each remaining hdc, omitting 1 st at end of row. Ch 2, turn.

7th Row: Hdc in each hdc across, increasing 1 hdc at end of row. Ch 2, turn.

8th Row: Inc 1 hdc in next hdc, hdc in next 30 hdc, 2 hdc in next 15 hdc, hdc in each remaining hdc, omitting 1 hdc st end of row. Ch 1, turn.

9th Row: Sl st in next 2 hdc, ch 2 and work hdc in each hdc across. Ch 2, turn.

10th Row: Inc 1 hdc in next hdc, hdc in each hdc across, omitting 1 hdc st end of row. Break off. Work another section in same manner.

BOTTOM AND FACE SECTION:
With white, ch 3. Hdc in first ch. Ch 2 to turn at end of each row. Working in pattern inc 1 st at beg of each row until there are 25 sts in row, then work 8 rows even. Dec 1 st at end of each row until 13 sts remain. Inc 1 st at beg of row until there are 20 sts in row, then work 6 rows even. Dec 1 st at end of each row until 2 sts remain. Break off.

SIDE OF HEAD:
With yellow, ch 3.

1st Row: Work 6 hdc in first ch. Ch 2, turn.

2nd Row: Working in pattern throughout, make hdc in next st, 2 hdc in each next 3 hdc, hdc in next 2 hdc. Ch 2, turn.

3rd Row: Hdc in next 2 hdc, 2 hdc in next 4 hdc, hdc in next 3 hdc. Ch 2, turn.

4th Row: Inc 1 hdc in each st across. Ch 2, turn.

5th Row: Hdc in next 8 sts, 2 hdc in next 10 sts, hdc in each remaining st across. Ch 2, turn.

6th Row: Work in pattern across. Ch 1, turn.

7th Row: Sl st in next 5 sts, ch 2 and work in pattern across row, ending row with sl st in each of last 5 sts. Repeat last row twice. Break off. Work another section in same manner.

WING:
Ch 7.

1st Row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next 4 ch, 5 hdc in next ch, working on other side of starting ch, hdc in next 4 sts, sc in next st. Ch 1, turn.

2nd Row: Sc in sc, hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next 3 hdc, hdc in each remaining hdc, 

sc in sc, ch 1, turn.

3rd Row: Sc in sc, hdc in next 5 hdc, 2 hdc in next 6 hdc, hdc in each remaining hdc, sc in sc, ch 1, turn.

4th Row: Sc in sc, hdc in each remaining hdc, sc in sc. Break off, Work another section in same manner.

BACK: Work first 3 rows as in the WING. Work another section in same manner.

TO ASSEMBLE DUCK:
Starting at large point of Back and Side Section, sew together about 22 sts on straight side edge of last row of each section (forming center line of back).

Starting at end of seam just made, sew straight edge of Side of Head Section to top of one Back and Side Section of body. Sew other Side of Head Section to other Back and Side Section to correspond. Starting with longest poing of Body and Face Section at tail, sew section to Back and Side Section, easing in any fullness and ending seam at back seam between two Side of Head Sections. Sew other side to correspond, leaving an opening for filling. Stuff firmly and close opening. Sew Beaks together at straight edge, gather slightly and sew to whit section as illustrated. Sew a wing to each side in same manner. Sew buttons to side of head or embroider eyes as desired.
