Man's Scarf 1949 Free Vintage Crochet Pattern


MATERIALS: Sock and Sweater Yarn 2 - 2 oz. balls.
Plastic afghan hook No. 4

GAUGE: 6 sts = 1”; 5 rows = 1”

Starting at one short ens, ch 50 to measure 8 1/4 inches long.

1st Row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop; retaining all loops on hook, draw up a loop in each ch across. There are 50 loops on hook. Yarn over and draw through 1 loop, * yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * across. The loop which remains on hook always counts as the first st of next row.

2nd Row: Skip first vertical bar, * insert hook under next vertical bar and draw loop through, place hook behind yarn, insert hook through next vertical bar having yarn in front of work, yarn over and draw loop through. Repeat from * across, inserting hook through last vertical bar and the stitch directly behind it at opposite end of row and draw loop through. This gives a firm edge to this side. Yarn over and draw through 1 loop, ** yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from ** across.

3rd Row: Skip first vertical bar, * place hook in back of yarn, insert hook in next vertical bar having yarn in front of work, yarn over and draw loop through, insert hook through next vertical bar and draw loop through. Repeat from * across, giving a firm edge to the opposite side as before and complete as fro 2nd row.

The 2nd and 3rd rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 2 rows alternately until piece measures 40” or length desired.

Last Row: Make sc in each vertical bar across. Break off, weave ends.
